The Bedruthan is a family owned boutique hotel located in a picturesque spot in between Newquay and Padstow, in the local village of Mawgan Porth. It sits high on the cliffside with a stunning view of one of Cornwall’s most attractive bays as well as the great Atlantic. It’s a stylish place that manages to find the happy medium between family friendly and genuinely appealing interior design.

The Bedruthan hotel spa has its own take on childcare giving adults some much needed alone time to chill out. The management have put together packages that actively encourage parents to relax by offering free childcare sessions and babysitting services – depending on the length of your stay. There’s even an opportunity to have breakfast in bed one morning. Childcare clubs are available throughout the day. There is a soft play area suitable for babies and toddlers.

For adults, it’s good to know that this a four star establishment that houses both a restaurant and luxury spa. Amongst its extensive facilities, it also has a leisure center. This comprises a gym, both indoor and outdoor pools, games room and the welcome addition of a resident surf instructor. There is also a thermal suite which is adults only where guests can either relax in the hot tub, sauna or steam room. Floor to ceiling windows provide yet more stunning Atlantic panoramics. The spa has several rooms and areas that parents can enjoy whilst their little ones are in the creche. The Sensory Spa Garden is a true highlight, which offers fantastic exfoliating salt scrubs. For those wanting to explore further afield, parking is free on-site with a golf club and range just 5 minutes away called Merlin Golf Club as well as a whole host of beautiful Cornish destinations.

The restaurant, The Herring, is a big reason to visit in itself owing to its award winning Cornish cuisine that features local produce from quality outlets. In addition to this eatery is the Wild Cafe that caters for even the fussiest of eaters with its range. There are old favourites to keep the little ones happy alongside more adventurous tapas and other fare. Within the section of the hotel called the Ballroom, guests can enjoy some Cornish roasted coffee or some of the delicious homemade cakes. Those that are after something a little stronger to help with relaxation should head to the bar and terrace with its cocktails to tantalise your tastebuds whilst enjoying the Atlantic views. This bar comes into its own come Autumn with sunsets that truly make for a memorable sundowner.

The hotel also offers free internet access in the stylish decked out rooms – as well as a fridge, a desk and a well equipped bathroom with complimentary toiletries and a hairdryer. Dog friendly rooms are also available so that every single member of the family can be included on holiday.

Our Verdict: The Bedruthan Hotel and Spa
Our Verdict
Wow, what a great coastal location with superb views of the North Atlantic Ocean!

What stuck out for me at The Bedruthan was the sense of style, colour and space with a decent mix of public areas for eating, drinking, relaxing and spending time with the kids. Our Scandinavian style Sea View Family Room was spacious with superb views of the ocean. The king-sized bed was really comfy and a waist high partial room divider separated us from the children’s single beds and cot. It worked well although it did get rather hot even without the radiators being on and the noise insulation was not so great as I could hear activity in the rooms next door to us.

The children’s tea time was a buffet affair in the 'Wild Cafe' with tea and coffee laid on for the adults. In the evening we made use of the room listening facilities where a dedicated member of staff listened in on the room whilst our kids slept. This allowed us to indulge in an adult three course meal at The Herring restaurant. Whilst presented beautifully, myself and my partner’s food was lacking in flavour, which was a little disappointing considering its fine dining credentials.

Breakfast time was confusing too as we were left to our own devices to figure out the system. We eventually had to ask a member of staff which, again, was disappointing.

The staff were all professional and friendly and our kids really enjoyed their time in the free childcare sessions which saw them being led enthusiastically around the extensive hotel grounds (we were watching from afar!). This gave us time to relax in the lounge areas and take in the glorious views and chat with the staff. After picking up the kids, who were reluctant to leave their new friends, we spent time in the hotel’s soft play which everyone enjoyed.

The spa facilities were excellent. This is what makes The Bedruthan so special, it really does well in combining the ‘luxury’ experience for both children and adults and has some amazing spaces such as the ‘Sensory Spa Garden’.

We enjoyed our stay at The Bedruthan, it really is a decent template for how one should run a truly family friendly luxury hotel. The only downside is the food not firing on all cylinders but, even so, it still gets our Editors’ Choice award because the rest of the experience more than made up for it.
